Our Heritage films
As part of our In our Words project, we have made four films about 60 years of the National Autistic Society and the story of autism in the UK.
Episode 1 – The origins of the National Autistic Society
In the 1960s, parents of autistic children were often advised to send their children to institutions. A group of brave parents refused to do so and formed the National Autistic Society.
Episode 2 – Diagnosis and the work of Lorna Wing and Judith Gould
One of the founding members of our charity, Lorna Wing, and her colleague, Judith Gould, undertook groundbreaking work in the 1970s to redefine autism.
Episode 3 – Campaigning for autistic people’s rights
Since 1962, the National Autistic Society has campaigned for and with autistic people. There have been some successes such as the Autism Act but the fight goes on.
Episode 4 – The future
We’ve come a long way since 1962 but there is still so much to do. Autistic people talk about the situation now and their hopes for the next 60 years.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage.
The National Autistic Society’s ‘In our Words: Sixty years of the National Autistic Society and the story of autism in the UK’ project has been made possible thanks to money raised by National Lottery players.
